About Temple:Kanaka Durga Temple is a well known  hindu Temple of Goddess Durga to be found in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated on the Indrakeeladri hill, on the banks of Krishna River. It is the second largest temple in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Kaalika puraana, Durgaa sapthashati and other vedic literature have mentioned about Goddess Kanaka Durga on the Indrakeelaadri and have described the deity as Swayambhu, (self-manifested) in Triteeya kalpa Kanaka Durga has ornaments  pleasantly blink  and  will be decorated with flowers. The statue has eight arms. In the hands of each individual weapons. Trisulam stabbed in the chest with a Mahishasura is in the position. The temple dedicated to the Goddess is approximately four feet in height.

In past history a Yaksha named ‘KEELA’ had been accomplish dangerous penance regarding holiest goddess Durga. Durga was pleased by his penance and appeared to him.he was blessing to   goddess Durga. Keela was so happy and enjoy by the words of goddess Durga and begged like this, “O holy Mother! you should always be in my heart. This is only my desire”. Heard  goddess Durga and gave the boon with showering the lunar lights of smile and said, “My Son! You wait here at this holiest planes of river Krishna in the form of mountain. In Krithayuga, next  the killing of devils, I will stay in your heart”.

Although by the system of goddess Durga, Keela had been waiting in the form of mountain for goddess Durga. Later  sometime, in the Krithayuga goddess Durga killed Mahishasura who was a blow for World.Still goddess Durga glow on the Keela mountain with eight arms in the form of MAHISHASURA MARDINI as she had given boon to keela. Un till that, Indra and all the goddess  praised her known as  “KANAKA DURGA” and This mountain has called as “INDRAKEELADRI”.
One more story says that in Dwapara Yuga, Lord Arjuna protected Pasupathastra from Lord Shiva at this situate and hence the city got its name as Vijayavatika and afterward changed to Vijayawada

Kanaka Durga Temple is the most important temple in Vijayawada. High up on the Indrakiladri Hill, the temple is thronged by devotees. Friday evenings, when the goddess is dressed in silken finery, at her glittering best, are always crowded. Vijaywada has certainly a lot to offer to tourists, check out more places to visit in Vijayawada.
