Panakala Narasimha Swamy -
god Who Drinks Panakam
"Panaka" or
"Paanakam" (in Telugu) it means a clarification of jaggery and water.
Lord Narasimha Swami in Mangalagiri is Known as Panakala Narasimha Swami as
Pankam is the main Prasadam (contribution) to the God. Panakala Narasimha Swami
resides on Mangalagiri Hill and the idol of the Lord in this temple is said to
be "Swayambhu" (self-manifested).
In the temple, there will be no statue or
Idol of the god, but here is just mouth, broadly opened to 15 centimeters. The
mouth is enclosed by metal face of the god. The temple will be opened till
afternoon only, with the belief that devatas will complete poojas in the hours
of darkness. The God takes jaggery water as contribution by a conch. The
Jaggery water is really poured into the mouth of the Lord, a gargling sound is
visibly easy to hear as if the Lord is in fact drinking it and the sound
becomes shriller and shriller as and when the Lord is drinking.
The audio will come to end next a little bit and remaining of the panakam (jaggery water) is terrified out. This occurrence happens not once in a day but is a frequent characteristic during the course of the day as and when devotees offer panakam (jaggery water). It will be appealing to note that still a one ant is not appreciable in front of the Lord or in the region of the temple in spite of the gift of so much jaggery water.Because the contribution of the panakam to the Lord is unusual, the Lord here is called panakala Narasimhaswamy. There is a legend about the contribution of the panakam (jaggery water) to the Lord.
